Then checkout the Kern River Parkway.  It's a great way to see Bakersfield.  The path runs from near Interstate 5 in the west to the Kern River Canyon in the east--about 30 miles long of scenic bike trails.  Along the way you'll pass the Murray Family Farms where you can pick your own fruits and vegetables, the California Living Museum where you can view tons of native animals, or continue up the Kern River Canyon for a day of hiking.
