CloseBoise, the largest city in Idaho, is sits against the Rocky Mountains and along the Boise River. Life around Boise is centered around outdoor activities. In the winter, Bogus Basin offers skiing, snow boarding and snow tubing. In the summer, there is hiking and biking, boating, camping, river rafting and fishing.
Boise has a rich cultural life. The Gene Harris Jazz Festival is a yearly event and Boise is home to numerous museums including: The Boise Art Museum, The Basque Museum and Cultural Center (a large Basque community is centered downtown around the "Basque Block"), the Idaho Historical Museum, the Boise Watershed and Discover Center of Idaho and the Idaho Black History Museum.
Boise also celebrates theater with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Boise Little Theatre, Boise Contemporary Theater, and Prairie Dog Productions. On the first Thursday of each month the business district hosts a gallery stroll throught the city's core business district and the Fall, Boise hosts a film festival called Idaho International Film Festival.
Just east of downtown, Morrison-Knudsen Nature Center features live fish and wildlife exhibits, bird and butterfly gardens, waterfalls and a free visitor's center. The Boise Zoo is in Julia Davis Park and has representation of over 80 species. A new Africa exhibit opened in 2008.
In the winter, enjoy nordic skiing at Bogus Basin Mountain Resort or spend a day - or night - skiing, tubing or snowboarding the resort's groomed downhill trails. "Bogus" is 16 miles (26 km) from the city limits (less than an hour drive from downtown) on a twisty paved road which climbs 3400 vertical feet (1036 m) through sagebrush and forest. Plus, Boise's indoor ice-skating rink is open year-round.
In addition to outdoor fun, Boise has great restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisine in both casual and elegant settings - from coffee houses to brew pubs to elegancant. Boise Towne Square Mall, Boise Factory Outlet Mall, BoDo, the Linen District, Hyde Park, boutiques, galleries and antique stores will have something for every shopper.
Boise offers registered nurses a great mix of urban amenities and outdoor recreation opportunities.
