A Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse offers a balance of the same elements that are found in the ICU, operating room, ER department and pediatric nursing. A Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse has to have excellent communication skills because they are the link between the patient, family members and the doctor. A Labor and Delivery Nurse must be able to think quickly and make decisions quickly. L&D RNs aide the obstetrician and spend many hours on their feet.
As a L&D Nurse some of your responsibilities consist of:
Providing assessment of contractions, dilation, heart rates, etc.
Performing follow-up duties which consist of:
Analyzing the condition of the newborn.
Checking the condition of the mother.
Watching for signs of trouble.
Watching for signs of infections and any other troubles.
One year of experience as a L&D Nurse within the past two years.
