New Hampshire was one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States and it's rich in history. One example is just outside of Portsmouth is the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion, the former home of New Hampshire's first royal governor, Benning Wentworth, who served from 1741 to 1767. The mansion overlooks Little Harbor and is one of the most well preserved homes of the colonial era. The White Mountains cover about a quarter of New Hampshire and they contain the tallest peaks east of the Rocky Mountains. The highest is Mount Washington at 6,288 feet and it winds over 230 mph above timberline. In the summer the White Mountains are great for hiking and in the winter you'll find great skiing, snowboard and tubing at the many ski resorts. But in the fall, the countryside is redecorated in a myriad of vibrant colors and people come from across the country to hike and drive among the fall foliage.
